What is Alt text?

Written by Sherlock Holmes

Alt text is optional text that you can add to an HTML element, making something without words “readable” by search engines. Search engines can only read words; they do not “see” what is in photos or videos. By using alt text (also known as alt tags), you are explaining to search engines what can be seen in an image and how it relates to your content.

Ideally, the alt text should contain a brief description of what is in the image and the primary keyword for the page on which the alt text appears. For eCommerce, be sure to include a brief product description. Ideally, these descriptions should be 125 characters or less.
